๐Ÿ† HUANG & ZHENG Deliver a Masterclass at Morgan โ€“ 640 klm! ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

The Western Pigeon Federationโ€™s first long-distance race of the season was a showcase of elite pigeon racing across Victoria. With birds liberated at 8:00am from Morgan into cool 10ยฐC conditions and south-westerly winds of 10โ€“15 km/h, the stage was set for a true test of endurance, intelligence and loft management. The forecast predicted strong westerly winds of up to 40 km/h at altitude, favouring flyers with birds capable of navigating through strong wind gusts.

Out of 110 flyers and 1964 birds, it was HUANG & ZHENG from Deer Park who delivered a masterclass, clocking a 2024 hen at a blistering 1965.75 metres per minute. Their bird was well out in front, showing not just speed but strategic navigation through the wind, and only having 9 flights on one wing ensured she took the shortest route home. Here is Peter in his loft proudly showing his BCH. Well done Peter!

It was a performance that left no doubt, this was a flyer in top form.

๐Ÿง  Results Commentary

Federation placings remain the highest honour in pigeon racing, and this weekโ€™s results reaffirmed that. At 640 km, itโ€™s no longer about geography, itโ€™s about superior breeding, training and feeding. The top 10 featured birds from Deer Park, Yarraville, Altona City, Williamstown and Sunshine, showing strong diversity across the federation.

Yearlings dominated the top 10, with only one older bird making the cut. It was clearly a henโ€™s day, with hens outperforming cocks across the board. The Western Pigeon Federation continues to lead the way in long-distance racing, with elite flyers consistently clocking birds at high velocities.

๐Ÿฆ Top 30 Federation Bird Analysis

  • Yearlings (2024 rings): 26
  • Older birds (2023 or earlier): 4
  • Hens: 21
  • Cocks: 9

The dominance of hens in the top 30 placings highlights the strength and conditioning of female birds in long-distance events. Itโ€™s a trend weโ€™ve seen building over the past few seasons, and it continues to hold true.

๐Ÿ“Š Top 50 Clocked Birds

The top three placings were all Western flyers, with HUANG & ZHENG taking both 1st and 3rd, and F & E DALLI securing 2nd. Frank Dalliโ€™s performance was blistering, clocking a velocity of 1764.20 m/min from Deer Park. His result was not only impressive on the board but also a reminder of the quality and consistency of his loft. Here is a photo of Frank in his loft:
Frankโ€™s brother, Joe, and sister-in-law, Maryanne, contribute to the federation in ways that go far beyond racing. Week after week, Joe and Maryanne run the WPF canteen, serving up quality food to hungry members. Their pastizzi โ€” a Maltese favourite โ€” has become a staple at basketing nights, bringing a taste of home and a sense of community to the club. On behalf of all members, we extend a heartfelt thank you to Joe & Marryanne and teh Dalli family for their ongoing support and generosity.

๐Ÿ† Western Flyers Dominate

The Fortitude Insurance Challenge โ€“ 640 km โ€“ was more than just a race. It was a clear demonstration of what happens when Victorian federations work together. With birds liberated together from the same truck, the Western Pigeon Federation (WPF) and the Victorian Racing Pigeon Union (VRPU) showed that unity doesnโ€™t compromise performance โ€” it enhances it.
Despite strong westerly winds, the Western flyer was not disadvantaged. In fact, WPF flyers dominated the leaderboard, clocking38 of the top 50 birds, which equates to76%of the field. VRPU flyers held their own with12 birds, making up the remaining24%. No birds from the Geelong City Homing Club featured in the top 50.
The top three placings were all Western flyers, with HUANG & ZHENG taking both 1st and 3rd, and F & E DALLI securing 2nd. These results speak volumes about the strength and preparation of the western lofts. Double clockings from CACHIA, HOLWELL & CINI, J & J PULIS, VELLA FAMILY, R. SAGGERS, D. HUNTER, M. PORTELLI and P. ANASTASI further reinforced the consistency and elite loft management of WPF flyers.
VRPU fanciers also performed admirably, with consistent placings across the board. Their results show that distance and preparation matter more than federation or wind. Itโ€™s not about where you fly fromย  itโ€™s about how you fly.
This race was a clear example of how federations can come together to reduce transport costs, build unity, and showcase the best of Victorian Pigeon Racing. As member numbers decline, collaboration is no longer optionalย  itโ€™s essential. The Fortitude Insurance Challenge was more than a race. It was a proof of concept that unity works, and that the Western flyer is thriving.
We now look ahead to the National 400 Mile in two weeksย  the first of the long-distance triple crown. These races will feature total Victorian liberation, no section results, and pure distance racing. Itโ€™s a true test of breeding, feeding, and training. And itโ€™s the future of our sport.
