A Strategic Start to the 2026 Season – St Arnaud #2 (21 June 2026)
WPF Race Analysis & Federation Report – St Arnaud #2 (21 June 2026)
A Strategic Start to the 2026 Season
The Western Pigeon Federation continued its 2026 racing program with another liberation from St Arnaud, a point providing just over 200 kilometres to the longest flyer. This distance, reinstated by the 2026 WPF Board, reflects a deliberate return to the successful practices of earlier years — practices designed to prioritise bird welfare, strengthen education, and build the correct foundation for long‑distance performance.
Starting the season at this moderate distance ensures that every member’s birds receive the proper early‑season conditioning. It allows pigeons to learn the line of flight, develop stamina progressively, and gain the experience required for the more demanding races ahead. As with last week’s event, the excellent returns once again confirm the wisdom of this approach.

Liberation Summary
On Sunday 21st June 2026, approximately 80 WPF flyers entered 2800 birds, joined by 12 Geelong flyers with 177 birds, giving a combined total of 92 flyers and 2977 pigeons.
- Liberation Time: 10:30 AM
- Conditions at Release: Overcast, very light South to South‑East wind
- Behaviour: Birds broke into four groups; the majority cleared by 15 minutes
- Stragglers: Approx. 500 birds remained for up to 20 minutes
- Line of Flight: Clearing conditions with SSE winds around 10 km/h approaching Melbourne

- Race Overview
The race produced steady mid‑range velocities, with the leading birds recording around 1097 m/min. Birds arrived in strong condition, and returns across the federation were again excellent — reinforcing the value of beginning the season at the 160 to 200 km mark.
This structured start is already proving beneficial, with birds showing improved orientation, consistency, and recovery — all essential for the longer races ahead.

Federation Analysis – Positions 11 to 30
The section from 11th to 30th place highlights the depth of competition across the federation, with many lofts clocking within a narrow velocity band, demonstrating both strong preparation and the benefits of the 160 to 200 km starting distance. Frank Briffa led this group in 11th place with a solid velocity of 1046 m/min, followed closely by Florian Zacellari, whose 12th‑placed bird showed excellent early‑season form. The Yarraville area featured prominently, with Saggers Lofts, M & M Saggers, and Saggers Brothers all placing inside the Top 22, reflecting consistent team performance and strong loft management. Deer Park, Sunshine, and Green Gully were also well represented, with Agha Loft, AF & AS Ali, Russell & West, R. Ziaja & G. Lup, and Felix Lia all delivering competitive results. The mid‑teens and early twenties were tightly packed, with only a few metres per minute separating positions, underscoring how evenly matched the field was under the day’s conditions. Notably, several lofts placed multiple birds in this bracket — a clear indicator of depth and team strength. The final positions within the Top 30, including Chris Cassar in 30th place, continued to show strong velocities above 1026 m/min, reinforcing that the race produced consistent returns across all regions. Overall, positions 11 to 30 demonstrate a healthy spread of lofts, suburbs, and families, reflecting a federation where competition is broad, balanced, and thriving — and where the 200 km starting point is clearly supporting the development and performance of teams across the board.
Closing Remarks
The WPF’s decision to begin the 2026 season at St Arnaud (160 ~200 km) has now delivered two consecutive weeks of excellent returns, consistent velocities, and strong bird condition. This approach clearly supports the federation’s commitment to responsible race management, proper bird education, and long‑term performance development.
As distances increase in the coming weeks, the foundation built through these early races will be crucial in preparing teams for the challenges ahead.
All the best for the coming races.
